Recipe Information
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Bake Time: 30–35 minutes
Cooling Time: 30 minutes
Total Time: About 1½ hours
Servings: 10–12 slices
Ingredients
For the Cake
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or hot coffee
For the Chocolate Frosting
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2½ cups powdered sugar
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ⅓ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A small pinch of salt
Instructions
1. Prepare the Cake Pans
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter or cooking spray. Lightly dust them with flour or line the bottoms with parchment paper.
This makes it easier to remove the cakes after baking.
2. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Make sure the cocoa powder is evenly distributed throughout the flour mixture.
3. Add the Wet Ingredients
Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients.
Using a hand mixer or whisk, mix until the ingredients are combined and the batter becomes smooth.
Do not worry if the batter looks slightly thin at this stage.
4. Add the Hot Water
Slowly pour the hot water or hot coffee into the batter while mixing gently.
The batter will become quite thin. This is normal and helps create a moist chocolate cake.
If using coffee, it will enhance the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste strongly like coffee.
5. Bake the Cakes
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
Place the pans in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 30–35 minutes.
The cakes are ready when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with only a few moist crumbs attached.
Remove the pans from the oven and allow the cakes to cool for about 10 minutes.
Carefully transfer the cakes to a cooling rack and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
6. Make the Chocolate Frosting
Place the softened butter in a large bowl and beat until smooth and creamy.
Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder.
Pour in the milk and vanilla extract and continue mixing until the frosting becomes smooth.
If the frosting is too thick, add a small amount of milk. If it is too thin, add a little more powdered sugar.
7. Assemble the Cake
Place one completely cooled cake layer on a serving plate.
Spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting over the top.
Place the second cake layer on top.
Cover the top and sides of the cake with the remaining frosting. Use a spatula to create a smooth finish or a simple decorative texture.
For an extra chocolate touch, sprinkle chocolate shavings or a few chocolate chips over the top.
Baking Tips
Make sure your ingredients are measured accurately. Too much flour can make the cake dry, while too little can affect its structure.
Do not overmix the batter after adding the flour. Mix just until the ingredients are combined.
Allow the cake layers to cool completely before frosting. Warm cake can cause the frosting to melt and slide.
Using hot coffee instead of water is optional, but it can give the chocolate flavor more depth.
Serving Suggestions
Serve slices of chocolate cake with a glass of cold milk, coffee, or tea.
For a special dessert, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream, fresh berries, whipped cream, or a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
You can also decorate the cake with chocolate curls, sprinkles, or fresh strawberries.
Storage and Reheating
Store the finished cake in an airtight container at room temperature if it will be eaten within a day. For longer storage, keep it refrigerated.
Allow refrigerated cake to sit at room temperature for a short time before serving so the frosting can soften.
Individual slices can also be frozen in airtight wrapping for longer storage.
Recipe Notes
This chocolate cake is easy to customize. You can add chocolate chips to the batter, use a different frosting, or decorate it with your favorite toppings.
For a richer dessert, serve the cake slightly warm with vanilla ice cream.
The most important step is allowing the cake to cool completely before frosting. This gives you a cleaner, smoother finish and prevents the frosting from melting.
