Recipe Information:
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 4 burgers
Ingredients:
For the Beef Patties
- 1½ pounds ground beef, preferably 80–85% lean
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- 4 slices cheddar cheese
For the Burgers
- 4 hamburger buns
- 2 tablespoons butter, for toasting
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 large tomato, sliced
- ½ small red onion, thinly sliced
- 4 lettuce leaves
- 4–8 dill pickle slices
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Beef Patties
Place the ground beef in a large bowl. Add salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Gently mix everything together until the seasonings are distributed evenly.
Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape each portion into a patty. Make the patties slightly wider than your buns because they will shrink as they cook. Avoid pressing or compacting the meat too much, as this can make the burgers less tender.
Make a small indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb. This helps the patties maintain a more even shape while cooking.
2. Prepare the Burger Sauce
In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, and yellow mustard. Stir until smooth.
You can adjust the sauce according to your taste. Add a little more mustard for extra tanginess or more ketchup for a sweeter flavor.
3. Toast the Buns
Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Spread a small amount of butter on the cut sides of each bun.
Place the buns cut-side down and toast them for about 1–2 minutes, until lightly golden. Remove them from the pan and set them aside.
4. Cook the Beef Patties
Heat the same skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Place the beef patties on the hot cooking surface.
Cook until browned on the first side, then flip and continue cooking until the patties are cooked through. Cooking time will vary depending on thickness and desired doneness. For food safety, ground beef should reach 160°F (71°C) internally.
During the final minute of cooking, place one slice of cheddar cheese on each patty. Allow the cheese to melt over the warm beef.
5. Assemble the Burgers
Spread the burger sauce over the toasted bun. Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half, followed by the cheesy beef patty.
Add tomato slices, red onion, and dill pickles. Place the top bun over the toppings and gently press the burger together.
Serve immediately while the patties and cheese are warm.
Cooking Tips:
Use ground beef with enough fat to keep the patties flavorful and juicy. Avoid overmixing the meat when forming the patties.
To get a nicely browned exterior, make sure the cooking surface is properly heated before adding the burgers. Avoid repeatedly pressing down on the patties while they cook.
Cheddar is a classic choice, but you can also try American-style cheese, Swiss cheese, or Monterey Jack.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve these burgers with crispy oven fries, potato wedges, coleslaw, or a simple green salad. Pickles, extra onions, and additional sauce can be served on the side so everyone can customize their burger.
For a classic American-style meal, serve the burgers with fries and a cold refreshing drink.
Storage and Reheating:
For best quality, store cooked beef patties separately from the buns and fresh toppings in airtight containers in the refrigerator. Assemble the burgers when you are ready to eat.
Reheat the patties gently in a skillet or microwave until heated through. Toast fresh buns before assembling the burgers.
Recipe Notes:
This Classic Cheese Burger is easy to customize. You can add caramelized onions, crispy bacon, jalapeños, mushrooms, or your favorite burger sauce. For extra flavor, experiment with different cheeses and toppings.
The most important thing is to keep the burger balanced: a flavorful beef patty, melted cheese, fresh toppings, and a toasted bun all work together to create that classic burger experience.
